• Opening Event: Sharing Space

    17:00-18:45 - Institut français
Opening address by Jean-Pierre Jouyet, French Ambassador to the UK

    Talk
Discover the brave new worlds of outer space with astronauts Timothy Peake and Thomas Pesquet and British space scientist and presenter of BBC’s The Sky at Night, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock. We will examine the new challenges for space exploration and assess the impact of space discoveries. Why, though, do we need to project ourselves into the universe in the first place? Jean-Yves Le Gall (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales) and Graham Turnock (UK Space Agency) will also join the debate.

    Demonstration
We travel back to the genesis of the computer revolution with Marc Raynaud, Professor of Mathematics and inventor, who will demonstrate at Imperial College a prototype of a Turing Machine that he conceived and implemented using the technology available when the momentous idea and the related conceptual model were put forward by Alan Turing in the mid-1930s.

    Debate
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly defying the realms of possibility in fields ranging from brain science, engineering and medicine to art, music and design. We venture into these new territories with leading researchers including Simon Colton, François Pachet and Aldo Faisal. Can human brain capacity be translated into technology? Will artificial intelligence be capable of creativity and imagination? How creative can we be in a world of AI?
